Widgeon Lake

Widgeon Lake is a hanging lake, which means it's perched up on a mountainside, only prevented from draining by a thin wall of rock at the top of a precipice.

Amazingly, few Port Coquitlam residents are aware that such a pristine treasure lies so close to their backyards, on the backside of Burke Mountain. But all you need to do is to take a boat (you can rent canoes at Grant Narrows in Pitt Meadows) into Widgeon Slough, then climb for a few hours up a good, steep mountainside trail. Towards the top, you'll probably be too much in awe of the ancient trees, their massive roots crawling along the path, to keep to the trail. Try, anyway.

The lake itself is absolutely gorgeous, with a huge stone edifice rising out of the depths on the other side. The fishing is said to be great here; floatplanes land here periodically with the most opportune fishermen in the lower mainland.
